خطوط الطول هي خطوط وهمية تمتد من القطب الشمالي إلى القطب الجنوبي وتقسم الأرض إلى مناطق زمنية (1)، وفي العام 1884م اختير خط الطول المار عبر المرصد الفلكي في غرينتش في إنكلترا ليكون مبدأ خطوط الطول (1,2).
قبل ذلك لم تكن هناك اتفاقيات دولية أو وطنية تحدد كيفية قياس الوقت أو متى يبدأ اليوم وينتهي أو ما هو طول الساعة، وعندما توسعت شبكات السكك الحديدية والاتصالات في خمسينيات وستينيات القرن التاسع عشر، كان لا بد من وجود معيارٍ زمنيٍّ دولي (2).
تشكِّل كل ساعة فرق مع الوقت في غرينيتش 15 درجة من خط الطول، وذلك لأنَّ الأرض تدور 360 درجة في مدة 24 ساعة؛ أي 15 درجة في الساعة (1)، وبذلك تتغير مواعيد شروق وغروب الشمس ومواعيد الإفطار والإمساك وفقًا لتغير الإحداثيات الجغرافية.
فيما يأتي، نستعرض لكم القيم التقريبية لخطوط الطول والعرض في الدول العشر الأكثر متابعةً لنا (3-12)، مع اختلاف مواعيد الإفطار والإمساك في بداية شهر رمضان والسابع والعشرين منه، والذي يبين لنا اختلاف طول النهار مع تغير الموقع الجغرافي وتغير الوقت من السنة.
